Cho Oyu Expedition
Overview:
The fifteenth highest peak in the world with an altitude of 7,952 m, Gyachung Kang lies between Cho Oyu and Mount Everest. It was first climbed in 1964 by Y. Kato, K. Sekizawa and Pasang Photo of a Japanese expedition where as the north face of the mountain was first climbed in 1999 by a Slovene expedition and was repeated by Yasushi Yamanoi in 2002.
Mt. Gyachung Kang expedition commence from Lukla after a spectacular mountain flight from Kathmandu. After landing at Lukla, we trek to Phakding. Next day we continue the classical route to Namche Bazaar where we will spend two nights at Namche Bazaar for acclimatization. Namche Bazaar is the gateway to the Everest and the main trading center for the Khumbu region. The town has a number of lodgings and stores catering to the needs of visitors as well as a number of internet cafés.
From Namche we take through Khumjung, Dole, Machhermo and Gokyo. Gokyo is a small village at the foot of Gokyo Ri and on the eastern shore of Gokyo Cho (Dudh Pokhari). The Gokyo village consisting of several huts is located at an elevation of 4,750 m making it one of the highest settlements in Nepal and in the world. From Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) we can have a breathtaking view of four 8,000-metre peaks: Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.
Crossing the Ngozumpa glacier which is the longest glacier in the world, we head towards Gyachung Kang Base Camp (5,350 m).
