Dominating the south-west of Namche Bazaar - the gateway
to Everest, Kwangde Peak (6,011m) is a challenging peak in Khumbu region. Kwangde
Ri or Kongde Ri is situated in the Lumding Drangka in a high and remote valley
bounded to the west by tumbling glaciers of Karyolung (6,511m), Khartang
(6,853m) and Numbur (6,959m). It is an impressive peak with multi-summated
ridges on the east of Lumding Himal. The ridge contains at least 4 peaks. All
can be climbed with one permit. All peaks of this ridge are above (6000m) and
inhibit some relatively small glaciers and some steep rock-faces. The actual
mass of the mountain is a 3-mile ridge running from the summit of Nub (6,035m)
to southeast of Kwangde Lho (6,187m) and Kwangde Shar (6,093m) and then turns
sharply to southeast through several lower summits and terminates at Nupla
(5,885m).
Trek passes through the Lumding Valley, acknowledged as
one of the most beautiful valleys of Khumbu region. We establish a high camp at
the snout of the Kwangde Glacier, providing us direct access onto the steep
snow slopes leading to the summit ridge. This magnificent vantage point, with
views north to Everest and across to the Nangpa La and Tibet, gives us a bird’s
eye view of the clusters of Sherpa villages below. This peak offers panoramic
views of the Rolwaling, Cho Oyu, Everest, Nuptse, Thamserku, Ama Dablam and
other snow-capped mountains.
