Expedition to Himlung Himal

Himlung Himal is one of the infrequently visited mountains of Nepal lying between the border of Nepal and Tibet in north of the Annapurna and Manaslu majestically situated above the Tibetan village of Phu in the western region of Nepal.  The ascent to its peak is technically less difficult than most. This is a superb ascent for people looking to push their altitude experience to a new level or for those who simply want to climb an ‘achievable’ 7000m Himalayan giant.

Previously a restricted region, Nepal Government opened the region only in 1992 by and so far only a few expedition teams including Japanese and French have summitted Mount Himlung. A rather barren landscape, strongly influenced by the Tibetan Khampa people, has a lot to offer culturally. Because of the very few tourists who have visited here, apart from the rare expedition groups, the overall experience is entirely fulfilling as this trek would give you a great opportunity to explore an almost untouched and unadulterated region of the country.

Expedition for Himlung Himal follows Round Annapurna route to Koto and from Koto towards Nar-Phu Gaon. The route passes through high peaks and passes, glaciers, remote villages, narrow gullies, forests, rocks, springs, Gompas and unique cultural settlements. The expedition also offers mysterious culture and panoramic mountain views of Nandadevi, Rajramba, Api Himal, Kappa Chuli Peak and many more. Base camp will be established at the height of 4900m; which is located at the upper border of one of pastures near Phu. Normally three high camps will be established to reach the Summit. Camp I at the height of 5450m, Camp II at 6000m and Camp III at 6350m.

Annapurna Base Camp Trekking

Mt. Annapurna (8091m) is the 10th highest mountain in the world and the journey to its base camp is one of the most popular treks in Nepal. There are few treks that combine so many different landscapes and bring you so close to the base of 7,000 and 8,000 m high peaks in such a short period of time as the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of the most popular treks in the Annapurna region.  The trail goes alongside terraced rice paddies, lush rhododendron forests, and high altitude landscapes, with the Annapurna Range in view most of the times.

The principal peaks of the western portion of the great Annapurna Himal, including Hiunchuli, Annapurna South,  Annapurna Fang, Gangapurna, Annapurna III and Machhapuchhare, are arranged almost precisely in a circle about 10 miles in diameter with a deep glacier-covered amphitheater at the center. From this glacier basin, known as the Annapurna Sanctuary, the Modi Khola knifes its way south in a narrow gorge fully 12,000 ft. deep. Further south, the gorge opens up into a wide and fertile valley, the domain of the Gurungs. The middle and upper portions of Modi Khola offer some of the best short trekking routes in Nepal, and the valley is located so that these treks can be easily combined with treks into the Kali Gandaki region to the west.

The itinerary starts from Nayapool at 1 1/2 driving from Pokhara, and going north up till Gorepani and the famous viewpoint of Poon Hill. From Gorepani you go eastwards to Chhomrung and then north again, entering the Modi Kola Valley up till the Base Camp. We return via Jhinu Danda, and give your tired muscles a well deserved rest in the delightful Jhinu hot springs.  Upon your return it is worthwhile visiting Gurung villages of Ghandruk and Landruk

The lodges in the Annapurna Trekking Region are well equipped with in general extensive menus, ranging from the typical Nepali dal bath (rice with lentils) to pizzas and spaghetti. Hot showers are readily available as well.

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek can easily be done by yourself if you wish to. It is possible to do this trek in all seasons, however, in the winter the Base Camp is sometimes closed due to the level of snow. In spring time the huge rhododendron forests are in full bloom which gives the trek an extra appeal.
